Outdoor and nature recreation is very beneficial to the physical and emotional health. Fresh air and greenery relax the brain, relieve stress from daily activities, regulate blood pressure, and improve your mood, and at the same time you are sculpting your body.
However, when exercising outdoors you need to adjust to ambient conditions, i.e. wear suitable sports equipment, clothing, footwear, water, food, etc. There is a great variety of outdoor activities, depending on your needs and abilities, but the following are the most common.
Hiking is an activity that is available to almost anyone. In Macedonia there are many mountains and hiking tours throughout the year with various intensity levels.
The most fundamental and important thing to have on a hiking trip is appropriate clothing, long flexible pants, layers, and always have extra clothing. You should always wear mountain- and season-appropriate footwear. It is desirable to wear a cap or hat to prevent sunstroke or sunburn during summer; or a winter hat in winter to keep you warm. Your backpack should be comfortable and appropriate for the tour.
Bring enough light food, water is a must and it is desirable to keep it in special bottles to maintain temperature and quality. Hiking sticks are always welcome on longer tours. If you are ‘lucky’ enough to find yourself on a mountain after dark, you should have with you a flashlight so you can see where you walk.
Basic equipment for biking is, of course, a bike. Clothing should be form-fitting and wick moisture, preferably with a padded crotch that will make biking more comfortable in the long run. Always keep an extra layer of upper clothing as a windproof jacket and helmet for safety. Longer tours require use of sports gloves.
Biking backpacks are usually smaller than mountain, but should contain all necessities such as a specialized water bottle, spare shirt, light food, spare tire, and basic tools. At the end of the tour you can treat yourself to a quality protein shake from a high-quality shake bottle that will regenerate your tired muscles and prepare them for the next training.
You need to choose the most appropriate footwear according to the terrain you are running on because that is the most important segment of this type of activity. More or less all of us want to listen to motivational music while we are running, but your comfort will significantly increase with sports headphones. Clothing should be lighter and quick-drying. A tight-fitting cap is desirable in hot days; and a tight-fitting winter cap with a ventilation hole is recommended in cold windy days.
Adequate hydration is always a number one priority, so you need to have with you an appropriate water bottle that will be easy and simple to carry, while maintaining water quality.
Outdoor fitness is a two-in-one activity. Usually taking place indoors it can become monotonous and reduce progress motivation. But if you purchase some basic training props, your possibilities during fine weather are unlimited.
Get a high-quality mat, suspension trainers, exercise ball, resistance bands, or ankle weights and you will find yourself with more than enough training options. You should of course also have your protein shake in a high-quality shake bottle for it is a necessary element for muscle regeneration following training.
